Proud traditions and innovation
Frøslev is a modern group with an international touch. Our intention is to be at the cutting edge of development and to contribute to the continued progress and extension of construction with wood.
Our story starts in 1931 when Frøslev Savværk (sawmill) was founded by Johannes Carlsen on the plot of land which was his wife, Mariane’s, dowry. Johannes Carlsen began sawmill activities in straitened and toilsome conditions. Hans Hansen, the local refuse collector, used a horse to drag tree trunks out of the forests and a horse-drawn carriage to transport the wood for processing at the sawmill in Frøslev. It was gruelling work. He had to load the heavy trunks all by himself.
For the cutting, Johannes Carlsen initially had one stand-alone saw that was driven by an old, noisy kerosene engine. It was covered with a primitive roof carried by a buried spruce post in each corner, offering him shelter from the elements. During World War II, the company was used as a hide-out for Danish freedom fighters.
The sawmill was owned by the Carlsen family until 1978 when Jens P.L. Petersen and Fuglsang Savværk bought it for an export business and warehouse with Jens P.L. Petersen as the prime mover and general manager. In 1982, Jens P.L. Petersen took over the sawmill, and the place was continuously modernised in the following years.

In the period up to 1985, about 30,000 m3 were cut per year. Unfortunately, in November 1985, Frøslev Savværk burned down, and production buildings as well as machinery burned to the ground. The sawmill was left unused until 1988 when Jens P.L. Petersen and his wife, Christa L. Petersen, revived it again, now under the name Frøslev Træ. The company was changed into a commercial and wholesale company specialising in processed and pressure-impregnated pine timber.
On 1 June 1990, the business form became a limited liability company, and that is the time which we consider our beginning. At that time, focus was on the supply of timber to timber businesses in Denmark. Timber that was produced through good cooperation with sawmills in Poland and Germany in particular. In the period 1985-2000, the company employed 10-30 employees.
In the early 00s, the company grew, and in the mid-00s, i.a. subscription customers joined. During this period, the processing rate at Frøslev increased. The son, Martin L. Petersen, joined the day-to-day management in January 2011 as part of a planned generation change. On 1 December 2011, the second generation took over day-to-day operations with focus on rooted development.
